Thanks for writing this. I just finished watching as well and also felt a bit blue afterwards. If someone asked me, what was it about? I would have said: it's about loneliness. I did like it despite, especially the being off the grid part and seeing nature by being alongside it rather than 'visiting' it on vacations. But as you said, people needed the McDormand character and she was too hurt to be able to rejoin others in a longterm way, i.e. she was lonely but it seemed too hard to live in the confines of love's expectations (as well as its gifts). She seems bitter when the romantic interest shows he wants to settle down and be with family - because his 'defection' probably underscores her loneliness as he makes another choice and is open to it.
